Notes
for ANNA MARY GURSKI:
Born Anna Becker in New York City
to a 16 year old mother, she was brought to an orphanage for homeless
infants which was established by the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton. She was 12 - 14 days old at the time she was left at the New York
Foundling Home.
In January, 1913, after having
spent 2 years at the orphanage, she rode the famous Orphan Train to the
midwest with a note pinned to her clothing reading, "Anna Becker taken by
Peter and Regina Gurski" She was delivered to the Gurskis in Petersburg,
Nebraska, where they lived for 2 years before moving their family (1 small
daughter and 7 sons) back to Jamestown, North Dakota, where they had lived
prior to moving to Nebraska.
