REUBEN3 UNDERWOOD (NATHAN2,
NATHAN1)
was born 1742 in Madison, VA, and died 1790 in Bourbon Co., KY. He married
FRANCES RUCKER Unknown. She was born
Abt. 1750 in VA, and died 1807 in KY.
Notes
for REUBEN UNDERWOOD:
Melba,
I think I have found your
"Nathan", not Nathaniel. This is what I found in
Ben Coke's, "The Underwood Family
of Madison County Virginia." I am going
to paraphrase in some cases and
give you my spin on things since since the
text is quite lengthy.
*REUBEN UNDERWOOD, SON OF NATHAN
UNDERWOOD OF MADISON COUNTY VA
Page 4. Owned land since he
bought 100 acres in 1771 and sold it in 1778.
This land was between the Conway
and Stanton Rivers. (I think he must have
been a speculator in land since
he sold numerous tracts of land.) He also is
found in a Chancery Court suit in
Madison County over a land deal. He
stated;
"That he got so much money that
he would never work anymore." By 1780 Ruben
moved south of the Conway River
to present Greene County VA. There he was a
property appraiser (Personal
note: Just like his father, Nathan). In 1781
Ruben was on the Orange County
militia petition as was his brother George.
He shows up several times on the
tax lists and apparently owned 225 acres.
He appears in the 1782 special
census of Orange County with a household on
nine people.
Around 1785 Reuden and family
moved to Kentucky. In July 1786 Reuben and
Frances Underwood joined Bryan's
Station Baptist Church in Fayette County
KY. In 1787 they joined Cooper's
Run Church in Bourbon County. (Personal
note--the word received was used,
may be visiting) Frances was a charter
member of Silas Baptist Church in
Bourbon in 1800. Reuben appears in the Bourbon tax list from 1787-1789. His
Widow Frances appears most years from 1791-1807. Reuben died in 1790. His
wife Frances was also known as Francis, Franky, Franke, but her maiden name
was not uncovered. She died in 1807.
Reuben and Franky's children are
proven by Bourbon Co KY deeds, Op356, Np532, Rp383, Chancery suit 710
Drusilla Underwood vs. John Cullock. Ben Coke recorded the children as
follows:
1. Frances Underwood m 1794
Bourbon Co KY to John Johns(t)on Bourbon deed Op356 shows they were in
Washington Co MO in 1819. Nothing further uncovered by Ben Coke.
2. Reuben Underwood
3. Bennett Underwood
4. Lucy Underwood c1770-185X,
married 1792 in Bourbon Co KY to Thomas Jones. Nothing else found on Mr.
Jones. In 1824, Lucy and her sister below Drucilla bought land in Jackson
Turnpike, Preble Co Ohio. Lucy Jones appears in the 1850 Preble Co OH
census.
5. Durcilla Underwood never
married, and after 1824 lived with Lucy Jones in Preble Co OH. She died
before the 1850 census.
6. Catherine (Caty) Underwood
married Isham Lanier in 1789.
7. NATHAN UNDERWOOD (more to
follow below)
*NATHAN (AKA NATHANIEL SEE BELOW)
UNDERWOOD, SON OF REUBEN UNDERWOOD OF
Bourbon CO KY
Page 18 of Ben Coke's; "The
Underwood Family of Madison County Virginia"
Married Sarah Conway in Bourbon
CO, KY in 1793. Paid personal property tax in 1788-1793, 1797, 1799, 1801;
and paid in Harrison CO KY 1800, 1802-1811, 1813, 1816, 1817. In 1810 he
paid tax on 55 acres in Bourbon.
In Jan 1818 or 1819 he sold his
part of his parents estate to his sister Lucy Jones (Bourbon Co deed Np532)
Nathan moved on and nothing else
in known. Ben Coke makes a clear statement that the Nathaniel Underwood
whose 1812 Veterans record reflects he enlisted in HC Gists Company, 28th
Regt Infantry at Paris KY on 26 Jul 1814 and was discharged at Lower
Sandusky, Ohio, 25 Jun 1815 with full entitlements to land bounty by law is
the same Nathan Underwood recorded above as the seventh child of REUBEN
UNDERWOOD. The discharge paper of the time give reference to his birth place
VA, approximate age of 40, 5 ft, 9 inches in height, brown complexition,
dark eyes, dark hair and occupation of a farmer. The discharge was signed by
First Lieutenant Thos. E. Boswell.
Ben Coke uncovered the fact he
recieved land bounty in Illinois in Sec 26, Twp 2m, Range 5W. The warrant
number was 13897, and the patent was delivered to Hon. R. M Johnosn, Great
Crossings KY (REF: War of 1812 Bounty Lands in IL, 1840/1947 pg 424). Mr.
Coke states that Nathan and Sarah must have seperated soon after their son
Rueben was born. In Bourbon Co KY Court Order Dp499, Jun 1812, proves that
son; Rueben, son of Nathan Underwood, age 14 on 17 Mar last is bound to
Aaron Griffing, saddler. He referenced the HISTORY OF THE EARLY SETTLERS OF
SANGAMON CO IL 1876, pg 733.
Mr Coke recorded "Little"
Reuben's birthdate as 17 mar 1798. Nothing more reflected in Mr. Coke's book
on "Little" REUBEN SON OF NATHAN UNDERWOOD OF Bourbon COUNTY KY
Hope I helped you in your quest.
Looks like a good match. Wish my family
tree was so well documented.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:
I was interested in the response
that Dave Underwood gave to Robert
Underwood, Henderson, NV. I too
am descended from the family of Nathan
and Elizabeth Anderson Underwood
through their son, Reuben, who married
Frances "Franky" Rucker. Could
Dave go down one generation and tell me
if Nathaniel Underwood (1776)
belongs with this family? I can't find
his name with this family on any
of the CD's or internet postings or
census records. He married
Unknown and had at least two children,
Claiborne and Margaret, my
ancestor. Could this be in error because
Nathan's son, Nathan was also
listed with a birth date of 1776. Any
help out there?
Melba Cox
Notes
for FRANCES RUCKER:
Per the request for children of
Rueben Underwood, 1742-1790 (Son of Nathan
Underwood and Elizabeth
Anderson). This is what Ben Coke's "The Underwood
Family from Madison County VA had
to say on pg 5 and other pages throughout
