my recent search.
Nathan Underwood, son of Nathan
and Diana Underwood, Middlesex Co, VA, was born 9 Feb 1707 per the Middlesex
Parish Register. Databases on the net reflect a different date, usually 1
Feb 1707. He migrated to Madison County VA and married Elizabeth Anderson,
daughter of George Anderson. The pedigree chart I obtained from the
volunteers at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City indicate a
marriage date of 1736 in Madison Co. VA. The children I have recorded are
Johnathan, George, Reuben, Joseph, Joshua, Joel, Elijah, Gideon, Sarah and
Ann.
My roots trace back to Elijah.
Ben Coke's; "The Underwood Family from Madison County Virginia" has a lot of
detail about the business relationships between the Andersons and the
Underwoods, an interesting summary of unusual circumstances around his death
and a great deal of discussion on settlement of his estate. Nathan died a
very old man on 9 Aug 1802.
Gideon was one of ten children
from the marriage of Nathan Underwood and Elizabeth Anderson. I have a birth
date of 1768 recorded for Gideon and a marriage date of 4 Jan 1791. Coke's
Book reveals that Gideon was a sergeant in the Capt John Nocholas' Co of the
1st Regiment of the VA State Troopers commanded by Col George Gibson. In
1777 Gideon wad a casualty at Bethlehem and was sick there late in 1777. He
was at Valley Forge in May and White Plains in Jun, and West Point in Sep.
Gideon married Mary Dohony, daughter of Thomas Mohoney in 1791 in Orange Co,
VA. In later years Mary lived with her daughter Lucy Minor in Owen Co KY.
Mary died by 1833. Coke states the children of Gideon and Mary were
Valentine, Thomas , James, Jameson, Margaret, Lucy and
Catherine.
