  • OBITUARY

AGED BRUSH CREEK PIONEER PASSED AWAY

Over Half Century Resident of Farm Where She Passed Away June 10th.

    Funeral Wednesday Afternoon.

Mrs. A. Yocum, one of the oldest settlers and pioneers of Brush Creek

township, passed away at her home in that place on Sunday, June 10th,

1918 at 11 o'clock P. M. She was in her usual health the day before the

final summons came, and ate a hearty supper before retiring. Her

daughter went to her room at eleven o'clock to get something and when

she returned she found her mother dead, heart failure having suddenly

ended her life. Some time ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis which

left her mind and one side of the body somewhat effected, but she was

able to be araound up to the time of her death.

Elizabeth Winn was born in Yorkshire, England, Jan. 21st, 1832. At the

age of 7 years she came with her parents to America and they located at

Mayette, Ohio, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage

to A. Yocum on March 23rd, 1851. They lived in Washington County, Ohio 4

years and then moved to Wisconsin where they lived about a year. Then

they came further west landing in Filmore County, Minnesota where they

lived until the year 1864 when they came to Faribault County, settling

on a homestead on the west bank of the Blue Earth River, in Brush Creek

township where she lived for 54 years. Five children were born to Mr.

and Mrs. Yocum, one daughter, Mrs. H. Waldref having preceded her in

death. The four living are: Ed Yocum of Pipestone County, Emma and Zoa

residing at home and Mrs. Joe Phillips who is also a resident of Brush

Creek township. The husband and father preceded his wife 22 years ago.

There are several grandchildren and several great grandchildren among

the later is Miss Therressa Wing of this village and brother Lyle of

    Albert Lea.

The funeral was conducted from the home last Wednesday at 1 o'clock Rev.

Mertins of Bricelyn conducting same. Enterment was made in the Walnut

Lake Cemetery beside her husband. All the children were present to see

all that is mortal of their dear loving mother borne to her last resting

    place.

The deceased was a woman who was held in the highest esteem by all who

knew her. She was quiet, unassuming in manner but her heart beat warm

with sympathy for all mankind. As a friend and neighbor she was most

true and faithful and as wife and mother and queen of the home she

filled that place with dignity and her ministratons of love and tender

care to her loved ones were ceaseless and devoted. During the hardships

and difficulties of pioneer days when neighbors were few and far off,

she nobly battled at the side of her husband and reared her family under

these conditions. She was a noble woman and many are those in whose

memory she will live through her voice is heard no more. The bereaved

family have the sympathy of their many friends in their great loss.
