  • Garrett (son of Hans Adam Stieffel / Boots) was born in 1765, probably in Hampshire County, West Virginia, later Hardy County and then Grant County. He died in 1819. Garrett married Elizabeth Peterson who was born in Hardy County and died ca. 1825, probably in Fayette County, Ohio. She was the daughter of John Martin (Bidert) Peterson (born in Switzerland) and Rosina (Teter) Peterson (born Hosina Deter). (See Bidert & Peterson Genealogies. http://www.sonic.net/~caddpro/BIDERT.HTM ) Garrett was a farmer and a member of the German Reformed Lutheran Church and lived in Hardy County, West Virginia and Ross and Fayette Counties, Ohio.

The following records give some indication of Garrett and Elizabeth's life:

  • Sims Index to Land Grants in West Virginia lists the following land grants for Hardy County: "Garrett Boots, 128 acres on South Branch and Mill Creek (1796, book 1, page 108); Adam Stieffel, 57 acres on Mill Creek (1796, book 1, page 430) and 63 acres on Mill Creek (1796, book 1, page 438)."

  • A deed in the Hardy County Deed Book dated September 16, 1806 (deed C-259) records a transfer from Garrett "X" Boots (signed with an "X") and his wife, Elizabeth, to Henry Cellar "for land on south of mt. between south branch (Potomac River) and Mill Creek, adjoining Boston Hagler and Michael Peterson."

  • The 1810 tax lists of Ross County, Ohio, show Garrett Boots as a taxpayer in Springfield Township. An entry dated December 4, 1819 (book A, page 312) in the Fayette County, Ohio common pleas court record reads: "Mrs. Elizabeth Boots, widow, and relect of Garrett Boots, late of this county, deceased, and Daniel Culver, administrator for Garrett Boots estate." Another entry dated October 11, 1820 (page 393) states: "Daniel Culver, administrator for Garrett Boots estate given one more year to settle the estate."

  • A letter written by Alice Lake Ketron, Route 3, Box 313, Greensville Route, Winchester, Indiana, to Jack R. Boots, Des Moines, Iowa on November 2, 1961 says:

Dear Mr. Boots,

You were inquiring about a letter written by Isaac Garringer (who was the husband of Sarah Boots of Randolph County Indiana) to her sister in Fayette County Ohio on April 18, 1868. Isaac lived near Farmland, Indiana. He was a brother of Alexander Garringer that married Elizabeth Boots in Fayette County Ohio and they came to Randolph County Indiana in 1830. Isaac came a little later. The Boots family also came with Alexander, at the same time, to this county. Here is the statment: "Alexander, wife and children lived in Missouri. .. the rebels killed Absolom and Samuel Boots in Missouri."

Some of the Boots family of Randolph County went on to Delaware County Indiana, and it's probable that some of the family went there before going to Missouri and since both Garringers and Boots went west, it would be wise to search those records of Howard County, Indiana.

Garrett and Elizabeth had twelve children: Martin, John, Jamima, Rosannah, Elizabeth, Solomon, Phoebe, Mary, Absolom, Samuel, Sarah and a son.

  • in 1800, at the North Mill Creek Lutheran & Evangelical Church, Adam, Barbara and ‘Elizabeth’ Stieffel took communion: could this latter be George Stieffel’s wife? or Garrett’s? or J. Adam’s (all Hans Adam & Barbara Stieffel’s daughters’-in-law?;

Boots Memoir on Garrett Boots (to Clyde Sharon Boots) [n.d.]: born a ‘Bidert’ (German origins of ‘Peterson’); ‘lived in Ross Co., OH 1807-1815; he sold his land in Hardy Co., VA Sep 1806; the 4 youngest children were born n Ross Co.
